▶ Your Answer : Some universities try to spend a lot of money funding social activiies so as to attact good students. However, I think it is uncessary things to do for the following reasons.
First, many students would like to choose the university how the university will support the growth of student. Universities provide environments for students to develop their intellectual abiltiy and interpersonal ability. Student can get to know what the supporting system is like by the result of research quality and the performance of alumni, not by just attending one time event funded by universities. Student will make a choice upto their future goal or destination. For example, I wanted to become a professor in law so I chose University of Michigan because it has a strong reputations in legal research. Alumni's strong performance in legal market also helped me make a decision. However, although I attended the social meeting funded by other universities, I did not choose to go there because I know University of Michigan is the one I can get best support.
Second, many times funding social activies by univerisities result in a bad reputation, which make universities' efforts in veil. When students join the activities, some students can complain about the event such as administration. Then university also has a bad image in relation with the event. For example, my cousin attended debated on Korean unification funed by K universitywhen he was a high school student. Unfortunately it ended with the fights between political parties. Since then many studnets including my cousin, do not think K university is good university.
With these reasons, I do not agree with the statement that a university should spend a lot of money funding social activities.
