▶ Your Answer :
The lecturer contends that recent findings
allow us to know that there were other reasons why the colonists who settled in
Jamestown suffered from severe starvation during the years 1609 and 1610. This
contradicts the reading passage’s claim that the colonists’ themselves were the
major reason for this starvation. (GOOD)
To begin with, the speaker argues that
there were millions of equipments and domesticated animals in Jamestown. This
means that the colonists were well prepared. This casts doubt on the argument
in the reading passage that many colonists died because of their lack of
preparation.
On top of that, the lecturer maintains that
there was the rule about food before 1609 in Jamestown. To be specific, the
leader of colonists declared the rule that he or she
cannot eat food if the person does not work. Therefore, it is unrealistic that the settlers spent so much time
looking for valuable minerals instead of working for food. This refutes the
assertion made by the reading passage that the settlers spent not enough time
to learn agricultural techniques since they were looking for copper, gold and other
valuable minerals.
Lastly, the professor claims that the
severe drought between 1606 and 1612 played a major role in the colonists’
starvation. The drought was too extreme so that the settlers were not able to
cultivate even corns. This counters the author’s argument that the bad
relationship caused by the settlers’ aggressiveness between the colonists’ and
the natives prevented the settlers’ from learning agricultural techniques.
