▶ Your Answer : It is controversial over whether there was an advanced civilization existed in the Amazon rain forest. The reading passage is providing three pieces of evidence to prove its points, whereas the lecturer argues against it by providing three compelling rebuttals.
To begin with, the professor in the lecture points out that there was a highly evolved society existed despite of the dense jungle. A satellite image showed organized system in the jungle, which proves that the people in there could have worked together. This differs from the author's claim that the dense jungle hinder the people from developing their civilization because the high rate of vegetation could make it difficult for the people to cooperate each other.
In addition to, the lecturer also maintains that what the artifacts lack sophistication is not true. The reason is that beautiful ceramic vessels and pottery are founded in the region, which means that the highly evolved society might have been possible. This is in opposition to the reading passage that the artifacts were not as sophisticated as the developed civilzation made.
Finally, the final assertion made by the professor is that the region was so vast that the European expeditions did not find. This is because there are many field today which were not founded even today such as the Cambodia. The thick jungle make it less likely for the explorer to find their locations. This refutes the reading passage which states that according to the European explorers, only simple sized societies were scattered throughout the land.
