In the reading
passage, there is ample support for the author’s claim that there are several explanations
how forts built with stones that are vitrified were made. However, the professor
in the lecture gives several reasons as a rebuttal to the author’s point.
First, the
professor contends that locations of the signal fire do not match with
vitrified stone areas. Signal fire locations have not changed and they were
located in few areas. This casts doubt on the reading passage’s claim that
signal fires heated the rocks so they were molted.
Next, the
professor insists that lightning could not be the reason of vitrification. This
is because that if lightning caused the vitrification of rocks, it should
strike same place over times. Also, the melted rocks area is very extended so
it was difficult for lightning to make rocks transformed. Moreover, he explains
that cracks of walls were caused due to wall’s poor condition. This counters
the reading passage’s assertion that lightning has made rocks changed and
cracked by intensive heats and forces.
Finally, the
professor argues that there were no evidences of volcanic eruption in this
area. Also, at that time, people could not transport volcanic rocks from other
areas. They used local materials to build the forts. This refutes the reading
passage’s suggestion that the forts were built with using volcanic rocks. |
