The lecturer explains the negative aspects of college
education while the reading passage casts doubt on it.
First, the speaker says that in 2011, 50% of the graduate
students under 25 were unemployed or underemployed. It is due to the fact that
too many people are having the same degree. As a consequence, there are
numerous people challenging in one job, while the number
of jobs is limited. The lecturer argues that getting an undersupplied and highly
demanded degree would be much more helpful. This strongly refutes the claim
made by the reading passage that the increasing
number of new jobs requires a college education.
Second, the woman lecturer
(woman이란 단어보단 lecturer이란 표현이 더 적절합니다. 만약에
lecturer이란 단어를 반복적으로 사용하는 게 마음에 걸리신다면 speaker을
사용하세요) says
that companies are compartmentalized, so it is not easy to learn new things.
For example, every workers may know how to handle office programs, but
if the computer is broken, the company will call
the IT specialists to fix it, rather than
teaching workers how to fix it. This rebuts the point made in the reading that
college education allows student to get higher quality jobs and they will be
more satisfied since they can get more technology access and social interaction
chances.
Third, the professor states that not all
college educated people earn more money than high school graduates people. She uses bartenders, car salesmen, and
chefs as an examples. They can earn a lot of money, even if they don’t need college education. This offers a
counterpoint to the argument mentioned in the reading that people who have a college degree usually earn significantly higher
salaries and even get cars or private planes from
their workplace.
