Personally,
I am a person who loves watching more than
reading. (TVs, and never read books.) It is a really bad habit, but it is hard
to resist the visual pleasure that TV can provide. (I can't resist the
sensational visuals that TV programs provide me.) It
is true that people can learn a lot from watching educational TV programs and
news. (And sometimes, I can earn various information from watching TV
programs, like current issues or basic knowledges.) However,
I disagree with the statement that people learn more by watching
television than by reading books for several reasons.
First of all, TV programs tend to (be more) focus on
entertainment purposes. (of the viewers.) Though
documentaries and news programs provide people with various information and lessons, (or teachings,) the programs that
have the highest viewer rate are mostly entertainment programs. Because of
this, TV channels tend to make more of those
programs than educational ones. Therefore, there is not much that people can
learn from watching TV. (the media spotlights the entertainment
programs, thus informing the television users with silly gossips, not useful
lessons.)
In addition, by reading books, readers can master
their literary skills. To survive in our society, reading and writing skills
are fundamental. By reading books, we can improve and learn more about how to
read fast, write properly, and use sophisticated vocabularies. Televisions, on the other hand, cannot serve this role of education since they only need our visions. We
don't necessarily need to try hard to interpret
the scenes of TV programs since they are not hard
to understand. ( TV programs don't usually use hardcore words where only
erudites can understand, and so on.) It is obvious
that people can’t improve their
literacy skills by watching TV. (There is no need to enhance such literey skills to
see TV.)
Finally, books last in the readers' mind longer. As I explained earlier, I
am a person who loves TV and watches it every single day, but frankly, the TV
shows that I see don't really last long in my memory. On the other hand, some
books that I've read are so impressive that it
lasts longer in my mind. (beenstruck me very hard,) and it impacted me
in much longer terms.
In conclusion, I believe reading books will teach us more lessons
than watching television. TV only focuses on
entertainment. Books are more beneficial than TV in
many ways. Therefore, I believe that people can learn more from reading books.
( people can practice literary skills, and books have longer impacts to us. I
really need to try to read books more.)
