Undoubtedly, government plays an important
role in people's lives where they work or play. Some people say that the
government should support scientific research even if it does no have any
practical purpose. However, I disagree with this statement by following
reasons.
To start with, government's funding for
scientific research even though it does have any practical goal may be waste of
money. To conduct a science research, it costs a lot since scientists need
proper device and nice environment where there is little disturbance. However,
if the research has no actual goals, the meaning of the funding will go vain. For
example, the Japanese government aided a research about ancient insects last
year. The result showed eating patterns and habitats of those insects which
never practically helped the citizens. This funding is considered as a huge failure among experts. If the government had supported some useful research,
they would have evaded criticisms.
In addition, the money spent by the government
is actually taxes from the citizens, which means that those money should be used
in a way that is helpful to the citizens. If the government consume the money
for other purposes that is not beneficial to the citizens, it might receive
complains resulting decline in credibility among people. According to a survey conducted by Politics Statistics Center of Korea, over 80% of citizens answered disagreed with the
policy supporting researchers when they do not bring practical results. Most of
the citizens hoped that funding to be used for improving quality of education
and public transportation.
All things considered, I firmly believe
that it is not appropriate to make the government fund scientists for their
research if the research does not have actual purpose. All in all, the importance
of deciding where the government should fund cannot be overestimated in modern
society. |
