In the reading passage, there is ample support for the
author’s claim that there are numerous advantages of genetically modified
foods. However, the professor in the lecture gives several reasons as rebuttal
to the author’s point.
First, the professor insists that GM crops could not
be the possible solution to (for the matter
of) world poverty. She explains that the
crop production is already way more than (over)
the amount needed to feed the world population. (the
need for everyone in the world to subsist.) However, the problem here is the
unequal distribution, which means that there are still many
people who do not have access to food. (and are starving to death.) This
casts doubt on the reading passage’s assertion that GM crops will solve the issue of world hunger. (done by
producing more foods.)
Next, the professor contends that the cost of GM foods
will rise. It is because GM companies spend much money on
new products expecting to make profit. (with
the expectation of more profit.) In addition, GM crops tend to require more
water than normal ones, which leads to a higher
price. (would make the price costly.) This counters the reading
passage’s suggestion that GM technology allows crops to be more resistant and the assertion that the price of foods will drop
without loss of yield by the inclement weather.
Finally, the professor argues that it is highly
doubtful that GM crops will make edible
vaccines to be stored and shipped effectively. She says that there still remain
problems with transportation and storage since the fruits with vaccines also
are susceptible to warm weather. This refutes the reading passage’s idea that
people can easily keep and move modified crops with vaccines.
