▶ Your Answer :
The
reading passage contends why Great Zimbabwe was structured. On the other hand,
the lecturer brings up several points to contradict this argument.
First,
the lecturer argues that it is unlikely that Great Zimbabwe was structured for
defensive fortress. This was because there is no permanent water source which
was necessary when they warred. Moreover, the archaeologists could not find archer
tower or other defensive structure on the stone walls. This casts doubt on the
reading passage’s arguments that Great Zimbabwe served a secure refuge.
Second,
according to the lecturer, it is not true that Great Zimbabwe was built as a
house of royal family. The reason is that the word “zimbabwe” means not “venerated
house” but “house of stone”, which is not have meaning of loyal. Also, the city
was fully sized city, which is lived almost twenty thousands of people. This
counters the reading passage’s assertion that the site was constructed for
royal people.
The
final point made by the lecturer is that it is doubtful that the site was built
as a religious center. This is supported by the fact that non-religious
expression was founded in the site. For example, a cave on a nearby hill which is
very important was used by king not religious leader. King utilized this to amplify
and carry the voice across surrounding area. This refutes the reading passage’s
claim that Great Zimbabwe was religious center.
