▶ Your Answer :
The reading passage provides several evidences that
the prescribed burning has potential drawbacks as a method of forestry
management. However, the professor in the lecture refutes the author’s claim
and points out that the method is truly effective and efficient.
First of all, the professor argues that the prescribed
burning spares the space for new growth of flora and trees, which benefits the
forest. Also, ashes of the burning could nourish ecosystem, so that forest
actually can be reinforced, thanks to the method. This contradicts the author’s
point that the method makes the forest vulnerable to invasive species, which is harmful
to the forest.
Second, the lecturer mentioned prescribed burning is
reliable in a sense of safety. The method has been used by indigenous local people who have been proved the effectiveness and safety for a long time. Also,
professional experts usually accompany with the project. Therefore, the danger
becomes significantly low. This casts a doubt on the author’s claim that the
burning is hard to control, and it will cause a huge disaster when it happens.
Lastly, the professor points out that the prescribed
burning is the most cost-efficient way due to its low cost. Compared to any
other ways used to regulate a forest ecosystem, the method is competitive in
light of its price. Also, regarding to the benefits which generated by
preventing a natural fire disaster, the benefits becomes much higher. This
rebuts the assertion of author’s saying that there are a lot of cost-effective
ways.
