"Honesty is the best
policy" is not an unconventional quote. Honesty here can be divided into two circumstances; telling
lies, or saying nothing at the first place. Some people say both the two types
are wrong and since being honest is the best policy, we
should be completely honest with people, including friends. However, when the
specific object comes to 'friends', things might be a little different. I agree
that it is impossible to be completely honest with friends for the following
two reasons. To begin with, white lies are
necessary to keep good relationship with friends. Since friends are one of
the most important factors in my life, and I put more priority on being in
good relationship with them than anything else. I believe telling the truth
only to ruin the relationship is not worthy. For example, one of my friends
Lisa told me much about her boyfriend and the problem she has with him,
asking for my advice. As are most of the conflicts between lovers, there were
some points that I believe are Lisa's faults, rather than her boyfriends'.
However, if I had told her exactly what I think, in other words, if I had told her that
it is herself that needs to apologize first, she would have felt
upset and disappointed in me, because the reason she told me her problem at the
first place is that she believes I am her friend, expecting me to be on her
side. So, in order not to make her upset and not to ruin our relationship, I
had to tell her a white lie that the problem is on her boyfriend, and that she
did nothing wrong. From then on, Lisa always comes to me whenever she has
problems, and asks for advice, and we are now best friends. Furthermore, friends cannot always
be 'friends'. In other words, there are some occasions that I need to compete
against them. Friends are the people that have similar interest or
preference, or that are in similar situation with me. That is why friends can
understand each other better than anyone else, and helping each other when
faced with difficulties, is what friends are for. Unfortunately, however,
the meaning of friends can differ depending on the situations. For instance, I
and my friend Emily are both interested in statistics, and we both planned to
do internship in a company. However, since the number of people who can be
interns is limited, we had to be competitors. When preparing for the job interview,
I intentionally did not tell extra information about the tips on the interview
to Emily. I did not lie to her, but I was not being honest, because it was my
first priority to get the internship myself. Although I regard my friends precious
and try to be honest with them, the situations in which I have to compete
against them make me unable to be honest. In conclusion, although the quote
'Honesty is the best policy' is considered somewhat reasonable, there are some
occasions that it is not; when trying to keep good relationship with friends,
and when I need to be competitors of my friends.
