Some people believe that learning about the cultures of other countries is helpful for university students and I partly agree with this opinion. However, I think that university students should not required to take a madatory class that teach foreign cultures, One reason is that student should have more time and opportunities to take classes that are more interesting to themselves and more helpful to their future careers, and another reason is that knowledge on other cultures have no practical value for the average people.
To begin with, the students should have more opportunities to take the classes that are hepful to their future career. The class on other countries' cultures might be interesting to them and helpful to improve their common sense in culture, however they don't have practical value for most students' majors and careers. For example, I'm a senior student in university and can only have at most 5 classes this semester. Thus, each opportunity to take class is so valuable and important to me. If I have to take mandatory a foreign culture class, I have no choice but to give up a valuable chance to take other classes that I need for my future career.
On top of that, Knowledge on a culture of other countries do not have practical value for average people. This is because they may not visit that country or meet people from that country during their lives. I would like to take my father's exampe to make my point. He was highly interested in France and its culture and history when he was young, so he took many classes about Franch culture and history, and read a lot of books about France. However, he has lived in Korea for his entire life,. Accordingly, he could not utilize his elaborated knowledge and informantion about France at all.
In this regard, I belive that the university students should not be required to take classes that teach the culture of a country other than own, as the reasons mentioned above.
