In
this reading passage, there is ample support for the author’s claim that there
are serious disadvantages of using coal as a fuel. However, the professor in
the lecture gives several reasons as a rebuttal to the author’s point.
First,
the professor contends that coal is not easy to mine even it is more
complicated. This is because the amount of the coal which is located near
earth’s surface is already exhausted and limited. Therefore, people need highly
techniques to dig more deep underground and more skilled experts than before.
This casts doubt on the reading passage’s assertion that the coal does not need
special equipment and people do not spend time and effort from digging since 90
percent of the coal is located near the surface.
Next,
the professor insists that people should spend more money on transporting the
coal. To be specific, the coal is heavier and bulkier than other fuels, which
means when people transport the coal, they should trip significant times. For
this reason, transporting the coal is more expansive than transporting others.
This counters the reading passage’s claim that the coal is more affordable and
less dangerous since it can transfer to solid form.
Lastly,
the professor argues that the coal industry cannot create more jobs for
workers. Many companies make an effort to reduce the cost of mining and
finally, they are able to develop highly advanced technique and equipment. With
the development of their machines, they spend less money on hiring people so the
coal industry will not expand and lesser jobs in the future. This refutes the
reading passage’s suggestion that requirement of coal will cause to expand the
coal industry, which needs to more employers, so they will make more jobs. |
