The lecturer believes that the
assertion of the reading passage on the serious problems and limitations
faced by the science of archaeology in the United Kingdom is unconvincing. She
provides the following three reasons to challenge the author's claims.
First, the lecturer asserts
that, in 1990, new rules and guideline were acted to preserve sites in
UK that have archaeological values and interests before or during
constructions. To be specific, any construction sites should be examined by
archaeologists whether or not there are archaeological values and interests in
the sites before the constructions. For example, the UK government, builders,
and archaeologists should discuss plans for preserving the sites if there are archaeological
items, excavation plans, and plans for documentations before the constructions.
This point argues against the first assertion of
the reading passage that many archaeological items were lost due to
construction projects.
Second, the speaker contends
that the financial support is not insufficient because construction
companies are in charge of paying the initial investigation for artifacts and
archaeological sites. She highlights that this financial resources are whole
different from the government's financial resources, so normally archaeologists
nowadays do not experience financial hardship. This
contradicts the author's claim that many archaeologists have had hard
time to have sufficient financial support because there funds mostly come from
the UK government.
Finally, the lecturer contends
that there are many jobs that require professional archaeological
knowledge and skills. These paid jobs are newly created for research,
professional investigation, and archaeological documentation and publication.
Thus, increase of such paid jobs is the highest ever been in UK. This directly casts doubt on the last point of the
reading passage that there are not sufficient paid jobs associated to
archaeology in UK. |
