In the reading passage, there is ample
support for the author's claim that there is no hope for the Everglades to
return to the original state. However, their professor in the lecture gives
several reasons as a rebuttal to the author's point.
First, the lecturer argues that water pollution has been declined. The
new government has regulated the amount of harmful fertilizers used by
agriculture. This encourages farmers to use the fertilizers that do not contain
hazardous substances. This casts doubt on the reading passage's claim that
severe water pollutions make the Everglades to be destroyed.
Next, the lecturer contends that soil loss problem has been cured. The citizens are restoring soil, and this process is quite promising.
It might take a long time to restore soil of the Everglades, but the soil will
be eventually restored in the future. This challenges the reading passage's
assertion that the soil in the region will vanish soon, and people will not be
able to grow plants in the region.
Finally, the lecturer asserts that the species in the Everglades will be
less likely to be extinct. The new government have stored about a
700-square-kilometers of areas and planned to convert the areas in the wild
marshlands. In this way, the Florida panther that is endangered to be extinct will
have larger habitats and more chance to survive. This refutes the reading
passage's suggestion that human development, such as farms and houses,
threatens wildlife of the Everglades.
