▶ Your Answer : Undoubtedly, variety plays a significant role in people's daily lives in many of the places where they work or play. Some people think that workers are more satisfied when they have many different types of tasks to do during the workday than when they do similar tasks all day long. Both sides may have own reasons to support their views. If I had to choose one, I would say that it is more beneficial for workers to achieve a greater sense of satisfaction when they have many diverse types of tasks to do during the workday than when they do almost same tasks all day long. There are several reasons as follows.
To begin with, when workers do various types of tasks to do during the workday, it will help them to improve their work performance and thus get a sense of satisfaction. Doing many different types of tasks and trying to learn how to solve new things require them to be diligent, passionate, and self-disciplined. When these personal traits are fostered, it is likley to bring a better result in their work place. To illustrate, according to research conducted by Harvard University, there was a huge difference between two groups of young adults. One group was consisted of those who had spent the whole day doing diverse types of tasks such as writing documents, management of employees, and discussion with teammates. The other group was made up of those who had spent their whole time only the same tasks like arranging items on conveyor belts. The researchers found that the former was more likley to have a higher knowledge about their company's working process and thus they got more salaries and feelings of satisfaction than latter. In particular, most of the first group showed a longer attention span, a stronger passion in their tasks, and an ability to delay gratification. On the other hand, many in the second group tended to get distracted easily, procrastinate, and act on impulse. This implies that workers are more satisfied when they do a variety of types of tasks to do during the workday. Without doing diverse tasks, one would fall behind.
In addition, having a diverse of types of tasks to do during the workday contributes to an increase in a worker's overall happiness. It gives them a chance to experience something different from what they would do in their usual routine in work place. A new experience tends to prevent them from feeling bored in life. For instance, when my youngest sister worked at a robot plant at first time, she was depressed thinking that her life became an exhausting routine. To survive in a competitive world, she spent the whole day working her own field of tasks, hoping that she could outdo others. Although she made a constant effort, it was not easy because everyone was working as hard as she was. Fortunately, she was able to make her life more meaningful by communicating other employees in different fields and learning how to access to solutions easily in different ways. She realized that her experience and knowledge only about her own field is not a solution to get over her boring life and doing diverse types of tasks during the work day make her daily routine more exiting because of a sense of new achievements.
In brief, I strongly believe that there are many opportunities to be satisfied when workers have various types of tasks to do during the workday than when they do similar all day long. Thus, trying to have many different types of tasks cannot be underestimated in the pursuit of happiness in life.
