There has been a controversy concerning the
issue that history and literature are more important school subjects than
science and mathematics. Some people think that latter ones are important than
former ones. However, my view on this is that former ones are more important than
latter ones. This is because history and literature are more helpful to
students than science and mathematics. So I agree with the following statement. To begin with, history and literature make
us think more affluently. For example, as we learn our history, we come to know
specifically about our country and ancestors. That make us feel grateful and we
live with pride of our country. In addition, learning literature make us think
deeply about everything. Most subjects have students just memorize the contents
and take their opportunities to think deeply. However, literature can relax
their mind and make them more thoughtful. On top of that, science and mathematics are
domain-specific knowledge. In other words, it is useful only for some people.
For instance, it is necessary for people whose job needs technological or mechanical knowledge to learn them. However, people with other jobs such as writer, language
teacher or babysitter do not have to learn the subjects. On the other hand, history
and literature contains relatively general knowledge so it can be useful for
everyone. To sum up, I totally agree with the
statement that history and literature are more important school subjects than
science and mathematics. First, we can think more affluently with history and literature.
Second, science and mathematics are useful for only some people, not for everyone.
For these reasons, I think history and literature are more important subjects
than science and mathematics.
