▶ Your Answer :
It is questionable which is better to succeed, to be specialized in
one filed or to be good at general things. I believe that being an expert in
one area is more preferable if you want to succeed in your career. It is
because to specialize makes it easier to get a job and you can invest your time
to develop certain skills.
To begin with, being an expert in a certain area will allow you to
start your career easily. These days, the labor market demands specialists who
can use their skills right away in the real world. You can take an interview
from H&M, the head-hunting agency, as an example. The interviewee mentioned
that companies these days want their new employees to be specialized in their
fields. They require them to demonstrate their skills on the field and show
their profound understanding of the current market trends. Hiring who do not
need occupation training is more beneficial to companies because they can cut
the costs on education. They seek a person who can increase the profits of the
company, rather than the mere encyclopedia. This case demonstrates current trends
of the labor market which prefers experts.
Furthermore, you can have more time to develop your skills by
concentrating on one area. Focusing on one thing is more efficient in improving
an ability rather than split one’s attention to various areas. You can advance
your skill by devoting your time to specific fields. For example, it is said
that there is a law of ten thousand hours, which means it would take ten
thousand hours to be specialized in a certain area. Moved by this law, Choi,
the legendary pitcher in the Korean baseball, spend his most time on pitching.
He spent his whole day in the stadium, except when he went to bed and even
practiced until he broke his finger. Consequently, he became the most admirable
pitcher in Korean baseball history. That would not be achieved if he did not
devote his time to one area. To sum up, being an expert makes you get a job easier and
concentrating on thing make you advance your skill. In these days, the
specialists are the winners, not the generalists. In this regard, I disagree
with the statement that it is better to learn many skills than to specialize in
on skill if you want to succeed. |
