▶ Your Answer :
Without doubt, education approach
is a significant part of today’s universities. Some people think that
universities should focus more on teaching practical skills that could help
students get a job, while others do not. Both sides may have their own reasons
to support their view. If I had to choose one, I would say that it would be
much better for universities to teach more practical skills for mainly one
reason. Today’s society requires students to be equipped with both knowledge and
practical skills. This means that there is a manifest limitation of traditional
education approach, which focus only on memorization of theories.
Current societal trends need
people who have not only theoretical knowledge but also practical skills.
University today should listen students’ voice and feed their needs. After
graduation, most of them find it very difficult to adapt into the real world
since they have never learned related tasks and skills in university. Let me
bring up my personal experience as an example. Back in college, I had to study
only abstract knowledge, which includes hypothesis, theories, and statistics in
textbooks. The university I enrolled in stuck to traditional education
approach. All of the curriculum were arranged to measure the level of students’
theoretical knowledge. All students had to do was only memorizing materials,
doing test, and getting grades. So it is fairly obvious that I was so panic,
even frustrated when I got the job in the real world. I did not know what to do
for such a long time at work because I have never learned practical skills in
university. If I had learned practical skills during the university period, I
would have performed much better at work. Thus, practical skills learning from university
could be a significant driving force so that students would put more effort
into tasks in the real-world context.
To sum up, keeping pace with
current trends in society, which require people to have more practical skills,
is more and more important today. In this regard I firmly believe that
university should focus more on practical skills that could be helpful at work.
