It is disputable which is more important for teachers between to connect with students and to be experts in their fields. Depending on one's background and personal experiences, one's perspective can significantly differ. That being said, in my opinion, I advocate that being a professional is more essential factor to be a teacher than connecting with students for the following reasons.
To begin with, teachers should be experts in their teaching subjects in order to acquire respect from their students. To be specific, teachers must help their students to understand and utilize knowledge about a specific subject. Teachers have to be experts in their fields to achieve this. If they do not have enough understanding of their subjects, students might easily notice teachers' status and cannot admire their teachers.
For example, my personal experience can be used to validate the claim above. There was a physics teacher in my high school. She usually just read the textbook during all the classes she taught and this remained students curious about what they just had been taught. Despite a lot of questions, she had not ability to answer the questions and all of students never respected her. Therefore, teachers must be professional to their subjects to be called as real teachers.
Furthermore, it is more helpful to students for teachers to be experts in their majors than to connect with them. In particular, students can share their thinking or emotions with their family or friends. In other words, connecting with students might not be an essential role of teachers. It is more imperative for teachers to be experts in their fields rather than to communicate deeply with students in order for students to seek their possibility and potential career.
Take my experience, for instance, there were two teachers in my high school: one was friendly but not good at teaching in classes and the other was unfriendly but had vast knowledge and a great teaching skill. Students tended to communicate with the former and then he was always surrounded by students. However, the latter was definitely more helpful for students to matriculate in universities.
In conclusion, I am highly convinced that it is more paramount for teachers to focus on accumulating their knowledge in their field than to focus on making good relationship with their students for the crucial reasons above. |
