▶ Your Answer : Some people may argue that due to enhanced
quality of education and the close interconnectedness between groups of people,
enterprises, and nations have made people kinder that the past. However, I
believe that people have become more cold-hearted than ever due to the advance
in the realm of scientific technology and societal development.
First and foremost, today’s smartphones and
internet have ruined people’s personality and character. Since the late 1990s,
cell phones and a virtual space where tons of information exist – the internet
– have been invented and developed throughout the century. This has resulted in
people who prefer having a conversation with the ones on the Internet who share
their downtime hobbies or interests rather the ones actually sitting in front
of them. Now, there is no more reason to physically meet different kinds of
people in our society and get stressed about maintaining those relationships.
This lead to the phenomenon where people don’t realize the necessity to take
kind to other people since they have the alternative – talking to a total
stranger with similar taste and preferences on the Internet. In fact, one of my
cousin, Steven, used to be really kind and outgoing, but now he’s stuck in his
room playing video games all day while not taking kindly to the people around
him.
Secondly, it is the societal advance that
made people brusque compared to in the past. As the society develops, people
started to seek “productivity.” Nowadays, people don’t like wasting their time,
really focusing on their to-dos and their works, supporting individualism than
ever before. Unlike the western countries, Korea was all about connections
between people and their teamwork, but now people prefer working on their own
to improve their work efficiency. This pursuit for productivity has resulted in
people less kind and sometimes “stark.” In fact, Mark, a friend of mine who
spent his entire life living in the countryside, recently moved to Seoul, the
center of South Korea. I think he is blending well in his company, but this
means he is losing interactions with people around him and he became so cold.
He used be the number one warm-hearted person I have ever met, but now he’s
not. In cities, people are busy living up their own lives and this led to their
cold hearts by default.
In conclusion, I firmly believe that the
advance in science & technology and our society itself made cold-hearted
people than ever before. Also, all in all, this trend seems to continue and be
passed down to the next generation. |
