It has often been brought up by people in an issue of controversy as to whether or not taking exams encourages students to learn more. Some group of people say that taking exams does do not encourage students to get knowledge across. However, I believe that taking exams works work positively for students' learning.
For a starter, exams help students focus in on their study. According to a research released by a PISA in 2012, the global average learning hours per day exceed over 10 hours. 10 hours are big numbers considering the fact that one day consists of 24 hours. For around half hours of a day, students sit on a desk and fight with books. It often makes students feel tired and jaded about the same patterned routine which in turn affects negatively on students' concentration. Also, by doing studying for long hours of study, students often lose their purpose of learning, if not be unless they are self-motivated students. However, when exams are assigned to students, students get a temporal purpose to learn and get knowledge across. It enables students to focus in on what they are dealing with on the desk, thereby making students to learn more.
Secondly, taking exams can inject a shot of motivation to students. To take exams is to receive a test score. After finishing exams, students are unsurprisingly destined to get a score which reflects on their performance level. Students, then, can see and know whether they studied hard or not. Either good or bad scores can encourage students to learn more. When the test score is unpleasant, students would think back on how they have studied in a reflective manner, expecting to outperform on the next test. If high numbers are written on their test evaluation paper, students would feel happy about the achievement as well as the time and endeavor they put in. It also renders students motivated to learn more seriously than the present times.
In a nutshell, even though there are group of a number of people who do not believe the positive effect of taking exams on students learning, I strongly argue that taking exams can encourage students to learn more. By taking exams, students can procure a sense of motivation. It also tightens students' concentration.
