▶ Your Answer : As student's rights become extended, more and more students also claim that they should be free to choose which subjects they want to study in school. Although I respect their right as a student, I strongly believe that high school should not give stuents the right to choose subjects because students can acquire not only better understanding of others but also different knowledge and skills by doing so.
First of all, if high school allows students to opt subjects, it is hard to expend their way of thinking. This is because when they pick out classes they want to learn, they are more likely to meet others who have similar interests and points of view. In contrast, students can meet many kinds of people in the class they are not interested in and thus, they experience difference views. For instance, a study of high schools where students should take classes according to the curriculum, revealed that their students are more tolerent of others' opinions. This is due to the fact that students are exposed to a myriad of people who are different from them and share their views in a class. Therefore, these encounters help students have less preconceived ideas of others.
Second, students can gain various skills and knowledge by taking different subjects. That is, if school permits them to pick up whatever subjects they want to learn, students would probably only choose their favorite subjects. This will hinder them from learning other areas of study and further gaining necessary information and skills. For instance, my high school allowed students to choose between social subjects and general science courses. Without any hesitation, I chose social ones since I was not goot at science and I liked histories more. It was not good because after I entered college, I had a difficulty in understanding the topic in a basic science class which was mandatory class. This is because I had never studied in that field.
In conclusion, since high school students can be open-minded and equip themselves with knowledge and different skills, they need to take a wide range of curriculum required by the school. On the whole, high school is the place where students explore many different fields in order to find their interests and specialize in their majors in college. |
