As far as the Little Ice Age is concerned, the lecturer takes a
stand that opposed the thesis of the reading and presents three
counterarguments. Specifically, the lecturer does not sympathize with the
reading’s view and argues that three causes in the reading are obsolete and are
not justifiable.
In the first place, the lecturer points out that although the Gulf Stream
near Europe and North America seemed to have cooling effect, the same stream
near New Zealand did not affect the temperature. This information tarnishes the
impact of the reading that the cold Gulf Stream brought considerable change in
temperature.
Secondly, the lecturer goes on to say that although people witnessed
a large amount of dust and clouds from some volcanoes, there were also dramatic
visual effects such as colorful sunset and gray snow during the Little Ice Age.
Despite these unusual incidents, there was no mention containing the dust and the
clouds by the volcano eruptions. Thus, this is not trustworthy. This directly
contradicts the claim in the reading that dust and clouds by the volcanoes blocked
sunlight and this lead the atmosphere to the Little Ice Age.
Last but not least, the lecturer concludes by saying that the cooling
effect of carbon dioxide simultaneously did not occur when human population
decreased. To be specific, carbon effects continued for quite long period time,
while population was rapidly vanished. Therefore, the change in population
cannot explain the ramification of cooler temperature. This point challenges
the reading passage which argues that reduced carbon dioxide made the temperature
substantially lower when human populations diminished. |
