Nowadays, with the advent of smart phones, people can do everything with their cell phones such as surfing the internet, listening to music. Thus, we can easily see students do other activities with their phone, while studying and it become serious problem with their studies. In my opinion, doing other things such as listening to music, or surfing the internet can negatively affect student’s learning because of two reasons: doing other activities while studying can cause students’ bad habit in learning and also students’ poor academic performance
To begin with, engaging other activities during the study allows students to acquire a bad habit. Habit is a repetitive action without thinking about it. If students do other activities every time when they are studying, it easily became a bad habit. Therefore, students became uneasy or uncomfortable when they are not engaging other activities. Moreover, although every time they decide to study hard with their school work, they cannot make any progress about their task without doing other activities. For example, Jun Kim, one of my classmates in high school, used to be very calm and good at studying. He has changed little by little after he started listening to music while preapring for his mid-term exam. Naturally, he became listening music every time when he studies. However, in the mid-term exam, he became uneasy and nervous because he could not listen to music during the exam. Finally, he could not focus on exam and he ends up screwing up his exam.
In addition, doing other things when they are studying allows students to decrease their academic performance. Since people cannot concentrate on two things at once, doing other activities prevent students from concentrating on their school work. With engaging other things, students cannot put in their effort to study and concentrate on their tasks. According to the Ministry of Education of Korea in 2010, there was a big difference between two groups of students in achievement. Students in Group A spent their time on studying with listening to music or surfing the internet and those in Group B were not engaged in such activities while they are studying. The researcher found that the latter group spent more hours on studying by 25 percent and performed better than the former group. Moreover, their academic score was higher by 40 percent than those in Group A. This implies that engaging other activities during the study has a correlation with the amount of energy into studying and it cause poor performance.
All things considered, I strongly believe that while studying, students should not engage other activities. This is because it can become a bad habit, so they cannot focus on everything when they are not engage in listening to music or using cell phones. Also, it leads to poor academic performance. For these reasons, the negative impact of doing other activities while studying cannot underestimate in order to focus on studying. |
