▶ Your Answer : It is often said that mandatory exams can negatively affect students' free will to study hard. However, I firmly believe taking exams plays a significant role in promoting their studying because every student takes care of their grades in school and they do not want to be scold by their parents. To begin with, almost all studnets are interested in and mind their score in tests. This is attributed to the fact that the better grades they have, the more possibility they have to go to a university they desire. All students know the test results are crucially important. Hence, if they are required to take a compulsory exam, they end up doing their best to get a good grades in spite of the fact that they do not want to take the exam. According to the Ministry of Education of Korea in 2007, there was a huge difference between two groups of students in the amount of study. Students in group A were notified to take a test on major subjects and those in group B were informed that they would not have any test. All students were asked to record their study time at home. The researchers showed that the former group of students spent more hours studying by 25 percent than the latter group and actually got better grades in school. This experiment means that tests has a direct correlation with the amount of time and energy students put in to study. In addition, bad exam score can cause students to be scold by their parents. This is due to the fact that in my country, the Republic of Korea, the degree of intervention of parents into students academic performance is fairly too high compared to other countries. Thus, most parents know about children's test result by score reports coming directly from school. If they are not satiesfied with test results, they are likely to teach them a lesson. In this case, most students cannot help but to worry about their test and study hard for a good result. For example, when I was in middle school. I never studied at all since there was no test in my middle school. Instead, exams was replaced with reports and assignments. However, when I went to a high school. The situation had changed and I had to take test. Compared to a middle school period. I acutally tried to study hard because I did not want be berated by my parents who was highly interested in a exam score. Even if it was hard time, I think I spent more time studying with a inevitable exam. This implies that exams encourages students to study hard due to their parents. To sum up, at first glance, exams are not helpful for students. However, It is virtually worthy of taking, making them study hard because most of the students take care of their grades and worry about being scolded by their parent for a worse test score. |
