▶ Your Answer :
Television became one of the essential home appliances. Some of the supporters claim that watching television helps people to learn more than by reading books. However, being on the opponent's side, people can acquire much more useful information by reading books than watching television.
First, most of the television programs that people enjoy are meaningless. Of course there are some educational programs. Unfortunately, people rarely watch those. For instance, my friend, Mark, whose television is always turned on, states that he hates educational programs. The reason was simply that it was not entertaining. Thus, he always watches comedy programs or variety shows which will never enhance his knowledge. On the other hand, my friend Max, he loves reading books. Whenever I meet him, he always have book in his hands. He says that he rarely watch television but read books all the time. Because of this, talking with him, I feel that he has a lot of knowledge that match to encyclopedia. Through these two people I learned that when it comes to learning, it is better to read books than watch television programs.
Next, watching television lowers one's concentration. In order to learn, learning skills are also important. One of the most important learning skills is concentration. If one cannot concentrate, then it is likely that one may have difficult time learning too. According to one experiment held in one education institute in Korea, people who watched television more often had hard time concentrating than people who read books more frequently. I agree to this study because Mark, who watches television more than any other people have hard time concentrating in one thing for certain amount of time. At times we study in the library together; he cannot sit still for an hour. Lacking concentration, he does not do well in his school work too. Because of this, watching television leads people to learn less than reading books.
Because watching television can disrupt concentration and the abundance of meaningless programs, reading books provide more knowledge than watching television. In addition to this, reading books can enhance one’s learning ability. |
