Currently there are a plethora of facilities and businesses which facilitate people's leisure life such as film, plays, delicious diners, cafes and the like. Even though the diversity and the quality of those businesses are skyrocketing than ever before, those tend to be exclusively enjoyed by youth, rather than middle-age people or senior citizens. As the entertainment and culture businesses are more and more targeted at younger generations as their main customers, it is true that the older generations are not considerably factored in when those businesses are setting their own target customers and organizing their contents adjusted to them. Therefore, the older people are being deprived of precious opportunities to enjoy their leisure life and cultural activities mainly focused on their own sentiment, thereby losing their time and chances to enjoy their life compared to a lot of chances given to younger people.
Firstly, more cultural facility and social systems are solely focused on the taste of younger people, including smart phone applications and entertainment and cultural businesses. Most of the cultural contents provided by the media or entertainment company are biased towards younger generations, mainly teenagers and twenties. Plus, the smart phone which became the major part of modern people's life and gives its users plenty of information on what kinds of cultural activities, delicious diners, or attractive sites are there is hard to be handled by older people. These combined factors result in the phenomenon that older people are excluded from those precious information on cultural and leisure activities, and consequently they come to lose chances to enjoy their life tapping out those information. In order to illustrate this, my father is working as a teacher in a middle school. Even though he has regular vacations every summer and winter, he had to stay home and took rest during vacations until I became a college student and help him to have more opportunities to hang out and enjoy many cultural activities, using information I got from the smart phone applications and the Internet sites. He said that his quality of life has greatly improved after I led him to enjoy the cultural contents, leisure activities and delicious foods from restaurants.
Secondly, since older people tend to shoulder heavy responsibility towards their family members, it is more difficult for them to enjoy life than younger people do. It is the general mood of our society that young people are obliged to enjoy their life since it is the only time for them to fully enjoy their current time. It seems that there is an untold promise in our society that when one becomes an adult and old people, he or she has to be responsible for life and work hard, without fully enjoying their time. Moreover, younger people have much more opportunity to explore their new careers, have diverse experiences and find out who they are, which ultimately leads to their enjoying their life. This freedom to explore shows that the older people who do not normally have those opportunity are not given any chances to know more about themselves through freely exploring new ways. For example, my friend who majors in English education once had an opportunity to work for the international organization as an internship program, and she found herself more interested and talented in this new field. After she decided to change her career through this experience, she told that she enjoys her life more than ever before. This shows that the freedom to explore new ways in life and new career which is only given to youth can give young people more enjoyable and happy life than the older people. Like this, the freedom to explore one's life, as well as many facilities and social systems on entertainment, leisure and cultural activities mainly targeted at young people make youth enjoy their life much more than the older people do. It seems that more social support is needed in order to make older people feel happy and enjoyable about their life. |
