▶ Your Answer :
Many generations of people used to live under one roof accepting it as natural part of their custom. Nonetheless, the trend nowadays has dramatically changed. People tend to avoid living with many family members and gravitate towards forming nuclear families usually composed of two parents and one child. The two reasons behind this phenomenon are that many people live away from their family for career and study opportunities and people's living style has changed.
First, many people live away from their hometown for career and study opportunities. People do not hesitate to move to another city or even to another country for a better job and education. It is because people nowadays believe that in situation of economic uncertainty, finding a stable job and getting competitive education that will make them stand out in the job market are essential. According to the survey conducted by University of British Columbia, out of 500 hundred students surveyed, over 400 students had responded that they are willing to move to another city or country if there is better career and education opportunities.
Second, another reason people do not form the extended family anymore is that people's living style has completely changed since industrial revolution. Before the revolution, many people used to devote themselves in agriculture and therefore needed the hands of many family members. At that time, many generations lived under one roof and farming was their main source of income. Nonetheless, thanks to the advent of many useful agricultural machineries after industrial revolution, people no longer needed to do the arduous work. They only need a few people to handle the machinery and it consequently reduced the importance of the extended family.
In conclusion, the extended family is becoming less important in society because people leave their hometown in search of better career and education and people no longer depend on agriculture as a primary source of income.
