▶ Your Answer :
As our society develops, extended families are decreasing. Some people feel that it is not desirable and think that the role of large family in our society is still important. However, in my opinion, I do not agree with them and think that the large family is less important than in the past.
To begin with, the role of the large family is not much important any more as it was in the past. In the old days, the society was an agricultural period which required numerous workers. This is because there were no agricultural machines or technology which are available today. However, in the informational society, technology and knowledge is more necessary that the number of people. For example, in the old days of China, people had many family members who can be helpful to their agriculture. At that time, the agriculture was manual, so if there were many people, the yeild could be increased. However, today in China do not emphasize a number of people, instead they put their emphasis on the quality of the people.
On top of that, it is hard to support the large family. As the growth rate of economy is decreasing, earning money is much harder than it was in the past. In addition, the cost per one family member has been risen because of the inflation. One report by the Economy Research Center in Korea has shown that the cost of supporting one person was ten thousand dollars per year. On the other hand, it cost fifty thousand dollar these days. It has risen by five times. Therefore, people today have difficulties earning money and supporting their family, which results in reducing the size of the family.
In conclusion, the role of the extended family is now diminishing, because today's society is not an agricultural society. Moreover, the cost of supporting family is too expensive to support the large family due to the inflation. In this regard, I firmly believe that the importance of extended family is less than in the past.
