There are many ways to motivate children to do well on exams .Some parents use positive reinforcement such as praise or rewards while others use negative reinforcement, including punishment and scolding .Though there is no doubt that positive reinforcement acts as a means to children's performance, I strongly believe it is wrong to reward children for good exam results because rewards may become children's only goals .In addition, children may come to believe that results are more important than the process.
To begin with, children may set rewards as their ultimate goal. In other words, instead of feeling as ense of accomplishment in learning knowledge ,children might study for rewards such as money , gifts an being promoted.Even though they become adults , this trend will continue. To illustrate, most of Asian parents in Korea ,Japan and China gave their children many kind of gifts as rewards whenever they do well on exams because there are a serious entrance exam hell. Due to tat , for many children , the desire to get gifts or other merits has become the highest priority and the meaningfulest goal than gaining and apprehending new knowledge.Consequently, in these countries, there is no true schalorstic mood in even universities and colleges since most of students pursue only the good results.
On top of that, it is likely that children will put more value on the result of an exam rather than the process of preparing for learning. Usually, children may not learn from a failure. Contrary ,many famous scienists such as Thomas Edison said that they learned from failures .Had they gotten rewards depending on outcomes , they would not have challenged to ty such innovative and creative experiments .As a result, most of Asian countries do not have such a creative scientific atmosphere like the U.S.A.
It is true that rewards can be utilized as a way to stimulate children to try harder . Hoever, as an outcome is not always correlative to endeavor, this approach may yield a situation where children are discouraged and no longer put forth much efforts. For learners, gaining knowledge, not rewards , should be the most important objective.Furthermore, children should be praised or motivated for the creative procedures that they have used in learning rather than the result itself .For the above reasons,I disagree with that
children should be compensated for good exam results .
