▶ Your Answer : In today`s society, it is widely believed that grades have negative impact on learning. However, I disagree with this view. I firmly believe grades encourage students to learn. This is because first, it fosters an atmosphere of competition in class, second it makes them to be aware of their level in class. First of all, a grade system in school
fosters atmosphere of competition amongst students. To be more specific, it is
fairly common for students to feel a sense of rivalry whenever the others in a group
get higher grades or performances, and this competition can cause them to feel
a little stress or tension, which as a result gives them a motivation to study better.
For example, when I was in high school, I joined a study group to prepare for
an exam. This study group was really helpful for me because whenever I stated
to lose interest in studying, their higher grades in class greatly motivated
me, so I could put in more efforts and, consequently I could get the high score
on the exam than I expected.
Second, a grade system can make
students to exactly know their level in class. In other words, they can figure
out their relative levels in class because grades are usually categorized
according to their relative performance compared to other students. Therefore, some
group of students who get high grades “A” can realize that they are in the high
position in class and it makes them to put in more efforts in order to be at the
top of the class, on the other hand, certain students who get low grades in class
can be aware of their low position in class, which may inspire them to study
better. Thus, grade system in school is indispensable to students. All things considered, it is my belief that my argument regarding this topic has been effectively and precisely delivered with the reasons mentioned above. Never should we forget.
