When I see TV commercials, newspaper advertisements and ads on the Internet, I can easily realize the fact that people put weight on appearance and fashion of people. However, this is not a desirable phenomenon because it can create a variety of side effects. Therefore, I have a negative perspective of this tendency of emphasizing the outward appearance. This is because, people spend too much money on their outward appearance. Moverover, people are susceptible to evaluate others with their appearance.
To begin with, people waste their money on the outward characteristic. People spend excessive money to buy cosmetics and clothes or to get a plastic surgery. They even invest more money in the outward appearance than the necessities. One study has shown that people spend more than 30% of their earning on enhancing their beauty. Especially, there are people who get a expensive plastic surgery or buy luxury clothes, even though they are unable to afford those. In addition, this study concluded that this phenomenon can bring an excessive consumption tendency from the people. I think it woulb be better for them to spend their money to help the poors or develop themselves.
Secondly, people evaluate people more with their appearance. I think people's inner side such as their personality or talent is more important when it comes to judge others. However, people usually put more emphasis on the way how people look, and evaluate others with their outward appearance. I have read a economic newspaper article which states that most corporations in Korea put more weight on the interviewees' appearance in the interview site. The interviewers usually prefer applicants who have neat and nice appearance to others who are plain but more skillful and talented. This article suggested that this tendency brings negative impact on the company because the company can overlook the true qualification of applicants who can be helful to the company.
To sum up, people should not waste their money on their appearance, because it can bring excessive consumption habits. And the tendency to evaluate others' with their appearance can make people overlook others. In this regard, I agree with the statement that people put too much emphasis on the appearance.
