As society develops, many issues arise regarding our lives and raise heated debate among people. One such issue that arouses our interest is whether preserving old and historical building is important or not. People from different walks of life may take different stances on this contentious issue. Personally, I firmly believe that the old historic buildings should not be replaced with modern buildings and there are two reasons that could validate my position.
First, maintain historical buildings can make the local economy lively. Mostly, many local areas have a hard time due to economic downturn, which leads to high unemployment rate and low demand for goods. As a result, the recession of local economy can have impact on the whole country’s economy. In this regard, preserving the old and historical buildings can be one of the ways to boost economy because it can attract many tourists to local area.
According a survey conducted by MBC, one of the Korean public broadcasting stations, 66 percent of the surveyed area experienced economic boom because of tourism industry, which made the area more lively and energetic and improved the quality of residents’ lives. In the survey of more than 20 local areas in Korea, they could manage to get out from the depression thanks to people who came to the area to see historical buildings. This clearly indicates that old and historical buildings can act as an economy booster so they should be preserved in a good condition.
In addition, old historical buildings can give people the opportunities to think about their culture and history. As society has become complex, precious value of those buildings are often ignored by many people. People living modern society are busy with catching up the trends which changes very quickly. As a result, they do not have enough time to take a step back and contemplate their history and culture. In this respect, the historical buildings can make people to ponder their identities.
Let me use my own experience as an example. Before going to high school, I had a hard time because I was so confused about my ego and identity. Then, on the school trip to Hanseong, which was the capital of Joseon dynasty, I could solve the problem. This is because I realized my culture’s value and thought about myself and history. It show people can have the chance to think about their culture and identity by visiting old and historical buildings.
All in all, because of the reasons mentioned above, I firmly believe that it is important to preserve and maintain the old and historical buildings.
