I could hear groans from the classmates when my science teacher required a group work for the science project. Especially, those who couldn’t be on the same team with their closest friends blamed the science teacher. As this case shows, group work has been emphasized by many teachers and schools, yet many students disagree with it and want ‘independently working system.’
First of all, accomplishing the work independently frees an individual from team members who tend to get free ride. There are dark shadows in group works that teachers cannot see; about 40 percent of students endeavor to do the team work, while another 40 percent do not concentrate. The other 20 percent of students play without looking at other 80 percent of students. In some cases, these 20 percent students do not attend to the meeting that is required. This occurs due to ‘social loafing,’ which shows that an individual’s responsibility dwindles during group work. For the 40 percent of students who work hard, the other 60 percent is a burden they should carry and it is a waste of time for them.
Furthermore, working alone saves time from matching opinions between team members. Because a team is composed of many individuals, who have their own ideas, opinions, and characteristics, it is very hard to fulfill every single opinion. Therefore, it is crucial to attain ‘the most’ satisfactory resolution. However, this requires an enormous amount of time. For example, during Ethics group work, when we had to choose a topic for a public campaign advertisement, my team had difficulties because what members required was all different; some said no smoking, others said saving nature, and the others said proper use of language. After all, we ended up choosing nothing.
Some people might believe that group work means more team members, which leads to a wide variety of opinions. However, more team members and more opinions require more efforts and attempts to embrace everyone. Therefore, for time and energy efficiency, schools, companies or teachers must require independent work and provide an appropriate reward for workers.
