Some argue that TV programs or movies we watch
should be free from any restriction society puts, giving total allowance to
express director/artist’s view. However, in my opinion, TV programs should have
some extent of obligation to include common moral value or decency to protect
young viewers. Further, these video images affect our view on society both consciously
and unconsciously.
TV program producers or movie
director should consider moral value in their creation because it affects young
viewers’ behavior. It is well-known fact that children have tendency to imitate adults’
behavior. It is also applicable truth when they watch TV programs or movies.
Especially, many TV programs and movies star celebrities which young people idolize.
If such video images contain morally vague concepts, it would affect the youth negatively due to their tendency to emulate role models.
Furthermore, the young tends to be less concrete about their morality, not
knowing what is good or bad, and have vulnerable mentality. In this case, exposing
them to morally ambiguous images damage their morality severely.
On top of that, these morally ambiguous
images, which bad people get rewarded and good people get punished for example,
would not only affect the young but also provoke adults. Visual images have
tremendous impact on people. To elaborate, when exposed to these images without knowing it,
it would unconsciously have effect on people. One study revealed that a person
who watched violent movies have higher tendency to display violent behavior than
that who did not. Therefore, putting images such as good people getting
punished instead of bad people would damage people’s faith that good deeds
result in luck and reward. If such belief continued among people,
it would bring serious moral hazard to the society as a whole.
In conclusion, creators of visual
images on screen are obliged to contain morally accepted consequence in the
story they produce to protect both the young and old.
