▶ Your Answer :
In
the reading passage, there is ample support for the author’s claim that a
four-day week working option will benefit the economy as well as the companies
and the employees. However, the professor in the lecture gives several reasons
to contradict the author’s points.
First,
the professor contends that shortening work time will entail huge amount of
additional cost. As new employees are hired to cover the rest, the company has
to care about new employee training, and medical benefit, which demands same
amount of money as five day work. This casts doubt on the reading passage’s
claim the companies can raise their overall profit that by shortening work
hour, having employees rested and alerted and hiring more personnel will not
cost more.
Next,
the professor argues that companies will have pay more as they hire more
people, it will require more space in the building for the new, cutting into
the company’s profit. Also, the work load will not be transmitted to the others.
This refutes the reading passage’s suggestion that it will lower the
unemployment rate since as many people’s duties are passed down to newly came
people. It also explains that if the workloads of four people decrease to 80
percent, then the hire rate will go up to 80 percent.
Finally,
the professor insists that there are a lot of risk for doing 4 day wok policy.
It will make employees feel their work instable and also harm their career as
they will be first option to fire when economic depression occurs. Also, as the
owner’s expectation is that workers will yield same productivity as they work
in 5 days, many of them will be unpleasant with their work. This counts the
reading passage’s assertion that it has many advantages with regard to
individual employee who can afford lower income. They can enhance their life
quality and have more time with their families, heading to their personal
interests and extra activities.
