As everything in life is like a coin that has two different sides, people must weigh the pros and cons before jumping to conclusions. After all, each and every question or topic requires careful deliberation in that there are always multiple variables to a truth. Although some people may adamantly believe that experts should take part in making a decision which can affect daily life of everyone on campus instead of students, I strongly think that such opinion lacks coherence to some extent. In my humble opinion, students should be the one who participates in making a decision pertinent to campus for the following reasons.
To begin with, when students get involved in making a decision that might change life of people on campus positively, it is likely to increase their overall happiness. It gives them a chance to devote to their classmates and school community, and thus feel rewarded and fulfilled. A fulfilling experience tends to prevent their lives from being meaningless. For example, when my sister was in high school, she was depressed thinking that her life became an exhausting routine. In order to survive in a competitive world, she had to spend the whole day studying. Fortunately, she was able to make her life more meaningful by joining a student body. The club was qualified to make changes in school policies by listening to other students’ views. After seeing some of her friends suffering from diabetes due to unhealthy food that was sold at a school cafeteria, my sister suggested an opinion to the school board to invest more school funding on improving the food quality. Her idea was accepted by the school right away, and she realized that people around were positively influenced by the policy change; they became healthier and energetic than before. People on campus respected and appreciated her decision, allowing her to be optimistic, confident, and strong. Without this experience, she would not be able to escape from her meaningless life.
In addition, when students’ ideas are excluded when making a significant school decision, it can lead to students’ complaints. School money is made up of students’ tuition, which means that they should have a say on how it is used. When they realize that the money is used on less important matters derived from experts decisions such as increasing the fund for club activities, they are likely to lose trust in the school board. In fact, although club activities provide diverse opportunities for students to socialize, the investment on them are unnecessary for those who do not participate in them. For example, when Gangnam high school in Korea announced after subsequent discussions with experts that it is going to decrease its funds on education by decreasing the number of classes they offer and increase its support on club activities, many of its students started to protest against this new policy, with activists rallying in front of a school office. They demonstrated to persuade the school board to reconsider the allocation of its fund on the ground as it is not one of their priorities.
In summation, yes, it’s virtually impossible to provide a completely satisfying answer to an open-ended question. Even though the jury may be out on the given essay question, we can come to a mutual agreement that people should participate in making a critical decision related to campus. |
