Some
people might think that it is more important to educate children for the
country development. However, I believe that for the successful development of
a country, it is more important for a government to spend money on university
than on the education of young children. First
of all, once a government spend money on university, it can relieve students’ financial
burden. Understanding the lives of students is necessary to substantiate that
many students have difficulty paying their tuition. Since tuition is very
expensive, students usually have a part-time job or take a student loan from a
bank, which increases the burden on students and deprives them of time to
study. If this pattern repeats, it would be hard for the students to achieve
academic performance, and the government will lose young talents, who will be
the main drivers of the country development in the near future. Therefore, it
is important for a government to make a good environment for the students. For
example, from 2009, the Korea government has provided Korean students scholarships
according to the level of household income. It has enabled students to focus on
their study, leading to better academic performance. On
top of that, university can purchase more research equipment. In response to
the increasing importance of the financial support from a government, many
expert opinions and research statistics reinforce the idea that if the
government spend money on universities, the universities can secure better
research tools. Experts say that the better equipment universities have, the
better academic achievement they would have. Basically, universities are
research institutes which form the foundation of the country development.
Hence, they need better research equipment to proceed their research. In
addition, since most of research tools are so expensive that it is burdensome
to universities’ budget, the financial support from the government is
necessary. For example, a couple of years ago, thanks to the government
financial support, Korea university purchased magnetic resonance imaging
machine. With better research equipment, students could proceed their research
in a good condition, and the number of papers submitted to high ranked journals
has increased.
To
sum up, I believe that for the successful development of a country, it is more important
for a government to spend money on university than on the education of young children.
Consequently, the importance of my view cannot be underestimated for the
reasons I mentioned above. |
