Some people think that television advertising doesn't negatively affect children who are younger than 5 years old. However, in my opinion, television advertising could have negative impacts on young children: it prevents them from developing language skills and having good spending habits.
First of all, television advertisements can't allow young children to develop language skills. This is because most of advertisements in tv show everything without giving children time to think logically. Therefore, young children tend not to think critically or logically while watching tv. According to a study conducted by Korean Educational Agency for Young Children, it found that children who spent most of their time watching tv and were continuously exposed to tv advertising were far more likely to have low levels of language skills than those who spent much time on reading books rather than watching tv. This was because the former didn't have enough time to think about facts or products delivered by televisions in logical ways.
On top of that, tv commercials also prevents young children from having proper consumption habits. This is because they make them crave more, exposing them to well-made ads which show new products with appealing designs and functions. For example, my young sister who was 4 years old got a toy from my parents that she had always wanted. However, after a few months, she watched television advertising for a new toy which was much bigger and prettier. This commercial made her desperate for the new doll, and she kept pestering my parents. My sister's case implies that television advertisement make children want something better, which contributes to bad consumption behaviors.
To sum up, young children are easily affected by television advertising, and it can't be a good educational tool given that it doesn't help improve language skills and have a logical consumption habit. |
