▶ Your Answer : Some people
say teachers can make their social and political views know to students in the
classroom. They insist students are already mature enough to respect various
point of view. However, I firmly believe that teachers should not reflect their
political or social views during the class. This is because first, making
personal opinions on certain issues will affect students to have biased views
and second, if students have already opposite opinion to their teachers, it
will lead them to lower their interest in the class.
To begin with,
knowing personal views on political or social issues to the students will make
them to have unbalanced views. Especially for most of young students, they
don't have their own views due to lack of political and social knowledge or
experiences. Thus, this will allow students to criticize certain issues without
having logical reasons. According to the research done by Michigan University in
2007, two groups were compared. Group A consisted of students taught by a
teacher who didn't reflect her personal views on political issues and group B
consisted of students affected by a teacher who strongly made her views.
Experimentee's ages ranged from 15 to 18. After a month of conducting research,
compared to group A, 80% of students in group B showed similar opinion with
their teacher without rational, reasonable reasons. This research shows that
students at young age seriously have affected by their leader in the class-a
teacher, and tend to erect their opinion similar to their teacher.
On top of
that, when teachers express strong opinions related to social issues, it will
discourage students from attending every class. This is due to the fact that
when a teacher's stand is obvious, students with the opposite view can feel embarrassed or dissapointed. Moreover, it will allow them to lower their
attendance rate. For example, when I was in college, I used to take Politics
class taught by a professor named Nancy. Although she was not supposed to
reflect her own political views during the class, she often made her negative
opinions on republican party in US. After
a few weeks later, I founded out many students dropped out her class
because not only they had opposite views with Nancy but also felt angry at the
professor for being unprofessional. This implies that teachers who do not
mention their political view during the class will provide a comfortable
learning environment to students.
To sum up, I agree with the statement
that teachers should not make their social and political views know to students
in the classroom. This is because first, students tend to have biased views
when teachers show their political views and second, if students have opposite
views with their teachers, it will make them to feel uncomfortable and thus
make them lose their interests in class. |
