There may be pros and cons regarding the argument that progress is always good. I am in complete agreement with this argument. In this paper, I elaborate on the two strong reasons for my position.
First of all, progress makes our lives happier. This is because living a better life is actually entertaining, and, therefore, it makes us laugh and fills us happiness and joy. Today’s society moves and changes at a very fast pace, so we are driven by hectic lifestyles. As a result, we often feel gloomy and drained because our lives are occupied by increasing amounts of work. Many of us, therefore, relieve some of our stress, by doing fun activities such as learning about useful things. In this context, we can be happy through progress of our lives. My personal experience is a prime example. On a day-to-day basis, I bury myself in work, and I am occupied with work-related matters throughout the day. Even worse, I am eager to be on good terms with my supervisors and co-workers, which makes me utterly exhausted by the smallest things. I then learn about swimming for a while to reduce my anxiety. To my surprise, even for a brief period of time, I can unwind and successfully escape from my stressful daily routine. Furthermore, I feel galavanized and ready for another day of struggle.
Moreover, my strong support for progress can be rationalized. This is atrributed to the fact that enjoying a better life helps us develop solid relationships with others. In today’s rat-race society, we feel pressured to beat the competition and spend more and more hours on work. As a result, we are hard-pressed for time and thus become alienated from our families and friends. In this context, cooperating with others to improve their lives and sharing happy moments can help them restore relationships. Therefore, the value of progress cannot be overlooked in this context. According to a recent CNN daily podcast (2013), four-fifths of the surveyed respondents said that they could rebuild their ties with their friends and others through a group study for better grade. The respondents argued that while they studied together to get better grade, they could interact with others frequently and develop close bonds, which increases emotional attachments.
Because of the reasons explained above, I strongly maintain that the value of progress should be recommended within the unique context of today’s society. |
