My First Day
Do you remember the first day in foreign school or traveling foreign country? Were there any event or moment that you couldn't forget? As a 10 years old shy Korean girl, first day in U.S elementary school is still unforgettable even though it already passed twelve years.
In 2002 from Korea, I had a chance to ride international flight to go study abroad in U.S. When I first got to Sea-Tac airport, I saw many foreigners and I felt I'm inside a movie. For my whole life, ten years, what all I saw was a person with black hair and brown eyes who speaks Korean. Since I never saw anything like this in my life, blond hair with blue eyes was really surprising.
Few days later when I acclimatize to new people, I went to the elementary school near my house and enrolled it. While I was waiting for the first day of my foreign school, I was worrying about English. Things that I can understand was such as "How are you?", "How old are you?" or "What is your name?"
Finally, it was the day to go to school. When I first got into the classroom, there were about 20 students in my classroom. About 15 students were Native American and 5 were Chinese and Vietnamese. However, there was no Korean student so I realized that it's going to be a really tough year.
When the class started, teacher asked "How was your vacation?" Half of the students raised their hand to talk about their memory in vacation. However, at that time I couldn't understand what the teacher asked to us so I just raised my hand. Then teacher point at me to answer the special memory. At that moment, what I can answer was "yes." Looking back on it now, it is really funny that in front of 20 students, what I can response to "How was your vacation?" was just one word, "yes..."
On the afternoon, I had one more experience. After lunch, I needed to go to the restroom but I didn't know how to ask. I waited and waited for someone to ask to go to the restroom so I can ask same way as him or her. About thirty minutes later, I couldn't hold it anymore and it rush upon my mind that I learned "Let's go!" in Korea school. I raised my hand to ask to go to the restroom and said "Let's go to the restroom!" Everyone looked weird at me but at that time, I didn't know what I was meant by that. Looking back at now, it is really funny and cute memory to me.
Last, even though I don't speak perfect English right now but I am really impressing to myself that I improved my English skills this much. By writing this essay and think of the past, I realized that there are no easy things and lots of mistakes in everyday life. However, it is true that everyday life can be a served as a foundation for my better life.
