In the lecture, the professor make the claim that the optimistic view taken by many people about wave farming might not be warranted considering all the drawbacks. Some of these mentioned by the professor includes the possibility of technological breakdowns, environment pollutions, and visual disturbances.
Wave farming, as claimed by the passage, can be the gateway to unlimited energy. However, this assumption is misguided according to the professor. The technology that run these wave farms are not perfect and can have malfunctions and breakdowns. Because of technological imperfections, it is too rash to assume that wave farming will be the key to unlimited energy/
Furthermore, the professor directly opposes the view that wave farming would be an environmentally friendly alternative to fossil fuel. While the professor does not go into the comparison between the amount of environmental degradation each method of harnessing nature’s energy would bring, she makes the point that wave farms are harmful to the environment because of the chemicals used to make the machinery such as turbines run smoothly.
Finally, the professor also debunks the idea that there will not be any visual impact to the scenery. The wave farms will need to be brightly colored in order to be clearly visible to passing ships. This bright coloration will be in direct contrast to the peaceful ocean scenery, ruining the beauty of nature.
