Technology has replaced manual and tedious work that was previously done
by human. People were thereby given more free time to invest on intellectual
activities such as education. Accordingly, people
started pay attention to what is taught in higher education system such as in
universities. Many concern universities not having mandatory history classes
and insist they should mandate students to take history courses. However, I
strongly disagree with this point of view. Compelling students to take history
classes that they are not really interested in can put too much stress on them.
In addition, students should be given freedom to choose what they want to
learn.
First and foremost, requiring students to take history classes regardless
of their major can put a lot of stress. College students, nowadays, are already
suffering from stress due to many problems that they face in their lives.
Considering the fact that university students are going through new stage of
their lives such as getting used to new college life and managing new types of
relationship is already stressful for them. Stress can harm students’ health
and grade as well. For example, when I was in college I had to take two Chinese
character language classes in order to graduate. I was so stressed out to learn
this course as I am not related to this field at all. Due to excessive stress
from taking two courses, my grade fall and I was frequently depressed. Thus, putting
them pressure to take mandatory classes that they do not have interest in will give
negative impact on students’ life.
Secondly, students should be able to learn what they want to learn.
Tuition fee for university is usually very expensive. It would be unfair for
students to pay for classes that they do not even want to know about. Students
should be given freedom to pick their own courses depending on their interests
as they paid for it. On top of that, by selecting the courses from their own
needs, it can help students acquire practical and useful skills for their future
careers. For instance, Korean research center proved that universities that
does not have mandatory courses showed 40 percent higher in employment rate
compare to those schools with the pre-required classes to graduate. Consequently,
it is advisable for students to select courses on their own.
In brief, I strongly believe that adding compulsory courses like history
is not beneficial for students. Students will suffer from too much stress.
Also, students should not be told what courses to take but rather decide on
their own. |
