▶ Your Answer : It is of great worth to discuss whether or not it is necessary to understand the past to solve the problems of the present or the future. The answer to this question can be various depending on each individual's perspective. As far as I am concerned, I agree with the given statement because of several reasons. First of all, I believe it is useless to understand the past to deal with present and future problems because the problems that modern people face did not exist in the past. To be more specific, one of the most serious problems facing people today is environmental problems, but these issues did not exist in the past. This means that understanding the past is useless. The destruction of the ozone layer is the epitome of this. As we all know, harmful gases emitted from cars that run on gasoline and diesel made from fossil fuels destroy the ozone layer that protects the Earth from harmful ultraviolet rays of the Sun. However, in the past, there were not many cars on roads that emit harmful gases, so the destruction of the ozone layer did not exist. Secondly, I believe it is unnecessary to understand the past to solve present or future problems since science and technology that can solve the problems we face today did not exist in the past. The perfect example of this is respiratory disease from which many people are suffering nowadays. As we all know, harmful gases emitted from factories and cars make the air polluted. Breathing contaminated air causes people respiratory problems such as COPD. We now need medicines to cure people who have serious COPD, but there was nothing we can get from the past to deal with these problems because there were no advances in medical science. To summarize what I mentioned above, I am against the notion that it is necessary to understand the past to solve the problems of the present or the future since there were no environmental problems in the past and there was lack of the advancement of science to solve the present or future problems.
