Nowadays in Korea, some people say the purpose of attending college or university has changed to ‘demonstrating’ their advanced knowledge gained at college or university, hence one could survive when looking for a job in a competitive society. However, different from what they believe, I am sure about the fact that the reason of most people attending college are what I am going to describe below, which is still the same from the past.
First, people attend college or university to extend their field of knowledge. I remember that one said, ‘the world is wide, and there are many to learn.’ The desire of learning is infinite when it comes to humans. For this reason, many people think what they have learned in their younger ages is not enough, and try to become more professional in their fields by getting lessons given by professors in college. In other words, college(or university) is a place where a person who has a thirst for further learning can find the answers of his advanced questions from the faculty, who are capable of answering those questions.
Also, people attend college to prepare their career. Colleges and universities are a place where many pre-employment-seekers come together. From making friends and hanging out with them, one could discuss with them about one’s career and get advice from them; thus, being more prepared before graduating all the school educations and really putting one’s foot in the bigger society of ‘adults’ – the society of workers in offices. In addition, those students that one made friends with and discussed serious topics would become one’s powerful supporters, even after graduating college or university. For example, one could find his(or her) friends when he meets a barrier, such as a conflict with one’s superiors, and get advice as he did in his time in college.
These purposes have a subtle difference from what some people talk in these days: it is different from just going to those places to get a report card that could verify one’s academic ability. To conclude, I believe that most of the people attend college or university for the same reasons that existed in that past – for further education and getting experience for better career, which mean simply what they mean in the first place, without considering much about showing it to others. |
