▶ Your Answer :
Some people prefer working at home to commuting to their workplaces, while others do not. Considering all my experiences as a freelancer working at home, I would rather choose to commute to my workplace than work at home.
To begin with, it is difficult for people working at home to have the chance to meet other people in person since they work at home alone. On the other hands, people commuting to their workplaces are able to get socially connected with other co-workers by meeting them at their workplaces every day. From my experience, when I got a job as a translator, I had to work at home alone. Even though salary and benefit was satisfying, I was so lonely and even felt like I was isolated from society because there was no one to talk. Personally, I’m a people person so this kind of working environment was so stressful to me. At last, I end up quitting the job in order to find a new job where I can commute so that meet other people.
Furthermore, one of disadvantages working at home is that the border between work and private life tend to become indistinct. In the case of people working in their workplaces, they do not have to work at their home. Once they leave their work, they can spend time on their private lives. However, it is difficult for people working at home to divide between work and private lives since their home is the place where they work every day. For instance, there was a survey conducted at Ministry of Labor in Korea in 2009 about people working at home. One third of answerer stated that they are seriously getting stressed because they have difficulty in drawing the line between work and private lives.
For the reasons stated above, I prefer to commute to workplace rather than to work at home. No matter how advancing technology is, I think it is better for people to commute so that they are able to get the chance to get along with their co-workers in person and clearly distinct between doing work and enjoying private lives.
