▶ Your Answer : Today, as the human population on earth is growing exponentially, people need to be “better” than the other in order to get what one desires such as job or wealth. In order to be better, however, higher level of education is inevitable. Most of the Canadians graduate elementary school whereas the number of people graduating high school is much smaller, and the number decreases as people go to university or college; but why do people attend university or college paying thousands of dollars? This essay will explore the detailed reasoning for the question why do people take post-secondary education.
One of the most predominant reason for attending college or university is to be prepared for the job. As a common example, generally, the ones that took the post-secondary educations showed much higher employment rate than the ones who only graduated high school or elementary school. This is because not only most of the universities and colleges teach advanced knowledges, they also offer large number of programs that ultimately helps their students to get a job after graduation. University of Waterloo, one of the Canadian universities, run a co-op program that gives students an actual job experience in the field that one is interested in; in example, if someone wants to be an accountant, he/she will get to work in actual accounting company or banks that are associated with the university. This will prepare students getting the job they want easier than just getting it from right after graduating high school.
Expansion of one’s knowledge is also one of the reasons why students choose to attend university or college. Especially, in order to get a job that requires a professional knowledge about the topic such as doctors, lawyers, or engineers, harder and deeper knowledge about the subject is needed; and universities or colleges are where those educations are offered. For myself, I applied to many universities since the subject that wanted to study, a genome biology, was not provided from any high schools
While preparing for the job and expanding one’s knowledge is important reason for attending universities or colleges, finding what one truly loves is the most important reason. By studying advanced courses, one may find his/her favourite subject is actually not that interesting while some other subject interests the one. For instance, one of my friend Ron, after graduating from high school, he chose to study law in university, but after a few months, he found out that he was more into biology. As a result, he changed his pathway from lawyer to biologist, and university is the place that helped him find out his true interest.
Consequently, people attend university and college to get prepared for the job, to expand their knowledge, and to find what they really desire to do in life. Although that does not mean people have to attend university or college, but by going through that extra education will definitely have a positive impact in life. |
