Some people think that they can get more lessons from watching television than reading books. However, I strongly believe that most of people learn more by reading than watching TV. This is because people imagine indirectly by reading books and also because most of people tend to hesitate to read.
First, when people read books, they get to imagine indirectly and think deeply. It eventually leads them to get many lessons from books because they actively communicate with the book. In contrast, when people watch TV, they passively receive the information and stories because television does not allow people think but just watch what is happening in the box. For instance, a friend of mine told me he actually learned valuable lessons such as how to socialize with people and furthermore, how to live righteously in life from a book, Harry Potte. However, after he watched the movie, Harry Potter, he was just astonished of its visual effects and sound effects but not learned anything from it.
Second, reading books helps people to learn because people hang back to read books a lot more than watch TV. That means people usually watch television just for relieving their stress but not to learn anything. However, many people open books to learn, gain information, and improve themselves. For example, when I used a television program to teach students, it worked at first for students but later, when I tested them with lessons they learned from the program, they could not remember anything. So I started giving them homework to read books about the concepts, finally they got good grades on their test.
In sum, I think reading is better than watching TV for learning as seen in people’s using indirect imagination and its difficulty to start. I recommend people to experience the joy of reading and getting long-term information from it.
